Windy Wedding – Manuel+Abby

I feel bad sometimes, it’s the day of someone’s wedding day and it’s cloudy. As a photographer, I wake up on the day of a wedding, look out the window and think, “Sweet! No shadows, soft diffused even lighting everywhere!” They think, “Ah…cloudy on my wedding day, so sad.”

Well in this case, it wasn’t cloudy but windy! Now I would never ask for conditions like this again, but I have to say it did make for some fun photos. The wind drove everyone crazy but visually speaking, I had veils, and hair, and trees branches flying sideways making every frame different!

These guys where troopers and we came out with a great set of photos!

Here’s also the link to their engagement photos we took.

This little wedding dancer was tearing it up!

Not sure how you did it (all in-camera?), but the one of her veil from behind with the blurry background kicks ass. So unexpected–the opposite of what you’d think would be happening. Always enjoy seeing you do new things buddy.

Kimberly - 9 7, 10 - 3:05 PM

Haha I love the one where you caught everyone taking photos

babuljak - 9 7, 10 - 10:37 PM

Nate – All in camera but with a very unique lens (135mm f2). It has a very wide aperture but also seems to blur unlike any other lenses with a similar focal range. I was loving the wind and couldn’t resist the shape of the veil and trees.

Thanks Kimberly! That wedding had tons of family/friend photogs, it actually took me off guard!

Sharolyn - 9 9, 10 - 3:17 AM

I also like the photo of everyone taking photos! Great

James - 9 9, 10 - 3:26 AM

That’s the way it is though. Photographers are just foul weather fans.

Arturo + Tina Wedding

Here are a few pics from a recent wedding I wanted to get up as a sneak peak for Tina and Arturo. It was at a beautiful location in the Oakland hills at the Skyline Community Church (all windows and backlight, but beautiful), SF Tea Gardens (I highly recommend NOT going there on a Saturday afternoon with the rest of San Francisco and a 14 member plus bridal party-I’m pretty sure they are in a few tourist’s scrapbooks by now!), and then finishing at the swank Clift Hotel in downtown SF.

The Grouch – 15 years in the making

We had all just graduated from high school and seven of us decided to live in a three bedroom house together. Yeah, sounds like a recipe for disaster – but we were good kids, messy, but good. Most of us were going to school and working odd jobs but there was one of us who had a different path altogether. The local jr college wasn’t working out for him and, besides delivering pizzas, most jobs didn’t interest him either. He kept bringing home vinyl records, boxes of them, and always writing stuff down on yellow legal note pads. I remember when he brought home his first “sampler”. He had spent all he had on it and then some. We would tease him, “Get a real job, go to school!” But his mind was made up, the Grouch was born.

Fifteen years later, a very successful, self-produced, self-promoted, self-taught, underground hip-hop artist stood before me. With a wife and young child back at his home in Maui, another house in LA, dozens of CDs and a very strong fan-base, my soccer playing childhood friend had made a very successful career doing what he loves and was still going strong.

Shameful this was the first show I had seen and photographed of his. I had wanted to for years but had we lost touch and both moved around a lot. The music was great and the atmosphere energetic as the fans chanting along side him as he delivered lyric after lyric. It was a privilege to push my camera through the devoted fans and snap pics for a hour. But what no one could see was the huge proud grin across my face. This was inspiring, he had done it. He had a passion, worked very hard at it, and was going to continue doing so. Success was his destiny.

1 of my top five hip hop artists! His music along with the lyrics are the best. Representing California!

I was introduced to the music of The Grouch and Pigeon John and Eligh and the whole Livin Legends Team back in 2004. I’ve been different ever since.

[...] On Thursday, August 12 I had a show in Berkeley, CA at the Shattuk Down Low. It was a bit of a homecoming; I had not played a show in Berkeley in a long time and a few days before that I had a childhood friend, Stephan Babuljak, contact me about photographing the show. I wanted to catch up so I told him that I was more than down to have him come shoot the show. The photos came out great and it was good to catch up with him, check out the rest of the photos over at Stephan’s website, along with a little back story. www.babuljak.com [...]

I’d love to see what you with your shoot! Thank you!

Manuel and Abby Engagement

This barely felt like work the other night: take two easy going people, who happen to be in love, put them in downtown SF during a foggy late afternoon, and voila…great photos! Everywhere I looked there seemed to be a cool photo backdrop. We also went to one of their favorite date spots the very chic XYZ Bar. Got love bright lenses and high ISO!

James - 8 10, 10 - 1:29 AM

I deff like the reflection shot. Very clean.

babuljak - 8 15, 10 - 7:16 PM

Thanks James!

Give me an E…

L…L…I…O…T…T…S!!! What’s that spell? The Elliotts!!! Here are some of my favs from Kristen and Micah’s wedding. Why the cheer? Well the bride, most of her bridesmaids and HER mom were once cheerleaders! I didn’t realize this until half-way through the wedding. No wonder every time they saw the camera I got the biggest photogenic smiles I’d ever scene. I guess the “POMPOM4″ custom license plate on the minivan should have been the first tip. Anyway it was a beautiful day at a St John’s Church in San Lozenzo and ending at the Lake Merritt Hotel in Oakland.
